Essential Information for International Students

🏦 Bank Account

Open a UK bank account for managing rent, tuition, and daily costs. You’ll need your passport, proof of student status, and proof of address. Bring some cash for everyday expenses until your account is active.

🏥 NHS Healthcare

If you’re on a programme for more than six months and paid the immigration health surcharge (IHS), you and your dependants can use most NHS services for free. Register with a GP near your home as soon as possible.

🦷 Dental Care

Register with an NHS dentist for reduced-cost treatment. We recommend visiting a dentist in your home country before arriving to avoid additional UK dental costs.

⚠️ Scam Awareness

International students are often targeted by scammers. Never pay unexpected “fines” to callers claiming to be from the Home Office. Watch for pressure tactics and requests for personal information.

🗣️ British Slang & Accents

The UK has nearly 40 dialects! Watch British TV shows, practise talking to people, and remember it’s always OK to ask if you don’t understand something.

📺 TV Licence

You need a TV licence to watch or record live TV on any device, or to use BBC iPlayer. A licence costs around £159/year. You can pay monthly. If you only use streaming services like Netflix, you may not need one.

📮 Post Office

UK Post Offices handle mail, bill payments, transport tickets, and passport services. You can also use courier services like DHL, DPD, FedEx, or Parcelforce for worldwide delivery.

Pre-Arrival Checklist

Make sure you have everything ready before travelling to the UK.

🛂

Travel Documents

Carry your valid passport, Short-Term Student Visa, offer letter, and Visa Letter at all times during travel. Keep copies of all important documents separately.

📄

BRP Collection

If you receive a Biometric Residence Permit (BRP) decision letter, you must collect your BRP within 10 days of arrival from the specified Post Office location.

💷

Financial Preparation

Bring enough cash for initial expenses (transport, food, SIM card) until you open a UK bank account. Have proof of funds available as required for your visa.

🏠

Accommodation

Arrange your accommodation before arriving. We can help with local accommodation guidance in the Hayes area. Bring your tenancy agreement for address proof.

Working During Your Studies

Important rules about employment while studying in the UK on a Short-Term Student Visa.

⏰ Working Hours Limit

You can work a maximum of 20 hours per week during term time. During official vacation periods, you may work full-time.

🔢 National Insurance Number

To work in the UK, you need a National Insurance (NI) number. Apply by calling the Jobcentre Plus application line. You will need your passport and proof of your right to work.

⚖️ Visa Compliance

You must comply with your visa conditions at all times. Exceeding work hours or working in prohibited roles could affect your immigration status. Always check your visa terms.
